2016 was an « El Niño » year, rainy and cold, which resulted in a late harvest for the 2016 La Primera Revancha Chenin Blanc, the first vintage for this wine that is an aromatic and floral white from vineyards in the district of Agrelo. The whole clusters were pressed in a vertical press and 20% of the must fermented in oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel tanks and kept for six months before being blended, filtered and bottled. The cool vintage seems to have suited the grape. Roberto de la Mota was after producing a Chenin for a while, but he wanted a vineyard with the old masale selection. But then he found this vineyard in Agrelo, between Catena and Piatelli, which had belonged to the Marchiori family, which Roberto had worked in 1985 with his father but didn’t realize the old vines were still there. In 2016 he produced a few bottles with the idea to increase volume in the future. What is special here is that it was the same vineyard he worked for the first time some 30 years ago. It’s floral and spicy, elegant and with good freshness. The palate is simply superb, with electricity and depth, longer than wider with a tasty, almost salty finish. The profile is austere rather than showy, in a style that should develop nicely in bottle. A great debut. 2,200 bottles were filled in September 2016. Robert Parker. The Wine Advocate. 91/100.
