Marañones’ top of the range and my favorite wine year in, year out is produced with the grapes of an old Garnacha vineyard that also names the 2014 Peña Caballera. It’s a north-facing, sloped vineyard at some 850 meters altitude. In this cold and rainy year (the grapes were harvested after the rains of late September, where it rained some 200 liters), there is a slightly more herbal character here, not as fine as 2013, a little more rustic and cold and tannins that seem to be evolving at a very slow speed. They consider 2014 one of the most challenging harvests of the last few years, because if it rained in late September, October felt like the universal deluge. This is a vintage of Peña Caballera that is going to require more time in bottle to get polished, as it feels very austere right now. It’s like the austere, mineral version of Marañones, from the higher part of the vineyard, which ripens slowly and takes longer to be ready. I’d love to see this in another five years. 2,200 bottles were filled in March 2016. Robert Parker. R=The Wine Advocate. 95/100.
