NIEPOORT – BATUTA – NIEPOORT BATUTA 2012
VIN : NIEPOORT BATUTA 2012 |
The 2012 Batuta is Niepoort’s very old vines field blend that was aged for 22 months in French oak (25% new). Typical of the brand, it is rather slight in the mid-palate, but that is always the case, even in somewhat bigger vintages. Its flavors are front-and-center and there is some serious tannic pop on the finish. It ends with a rush of beautiful fruit, lifted, fresh, lively and delicious. Its purity is welcome and remarkable. It doesn’t win top honors in that regard for Niepoort this year–that would be the Bioma, also reviewed–but it comes pretty close. The waves of delicious fruit on the fresh finish are certainly convincing. This understated Batuta should drink beautifully for quite some time. Even though it is very approachable with a bit of air, you’d be well advised to give it a couple of years to settle down. Robert Parker. The Wine Advocate. 92/100.
