I never tasted the fresher 2013 because we jumped to the 2014 República del Malbec after the somehow disappointing 2012 I tasted last time. It’s produced with grapes from centenary vines from Las Compuertas planted at some 1,000 meters altitude. In this 2014, the vineyard used is different from the one that provided the grapes for previous years. It’s higher in altitude and the massale selection has very diverse plants. It fermented in 1,000-liter French oak vats with indigenous yeasts and half of the wine was kept there while the rest was put in barrels to mature. This keeps a more toasty and ripe profile, with some lactic notes, distinctively toastier than the other wines. The wine has power and slightly chunky tannins, a dry finish and a more mainstream profile. He has not bought new barriques in the last couple of years, and he’s going towards bigger volumes, too, so this wine should change in future vintages. I’ll wait for this one to get better integration of the oak in bottle. 12,000 bottles were filled in October 2015. Robert Parker. The Wine Advocate. 91/100.
