The cool climate of the Leyda Valley, and even more in a vintage like 2013, produces very spicy Syrah; This is the case with the 2013 Ventolera Syrah, which comes from grapes sourced from vines regrafted on Chardonnay vines that were planted in 1999; this has an effect on the ripening of the grapes — yields have to be low and harvested late to achieve proper ripeness of the grapes, and the resulting wine has moderate alcohol (12.5%) and good acidity (pH 3.5). The grapes are picked very late, almost two months after Pinot Noir, and go through a long cold soak (35 days) before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. There were two weeks of post-fermentative maceration before the wine is put into new, second and third use French oak barrels for the élevage, which lasted some 15 months. The nose is dominated by black olives and smoky bacon aromas with mineral hints, reminiscent of a northern Rhône, from red granite soils, with lots of cracked peppercorns. It also has the volume in the palate; it is a textbook cold climate Syrah with great acidity, tremendous personality, very balsamic (bay leaf), and meaty with a fine thread of acidity going through its core. After time in the glass, finally the telltale aromas of violets made their appearance. It was bottled in October 2014. This would be ideal with food. Robert Parker. The Wine spectator. 92/100.
