The eponymous red 2014 Marañones is pure Garnacha from the San Martín de Valdeiglesias zone (called « paraje » in Spain) that also names the wine and winery. It is at the bottom of Peña Caballera; they have added a small plot and some of the vines have been improved and are yielding some more grapes. This always has a juniper and stony character that in a way made me think of autumn. Since 2014 they have also been working these vines biodynamically (not only the single vineyards as they were doing before), and this should be noticed in the wines. San Martín always provides some chalky-like tannins that lend a special tastiness, almost salty. This is a year of contained ripeness, a very good showing for Marañones. 7,000 bottles and 60 magnums were filled in February 2016. Robert Parker. The Wine Advocate.93/100.
